When actors perform their finest work they appear to work from a point of purity, a place, which is uncluttered, unfettered, and unimpeded by self.
They change their state of being, alter their state of consciousness.
They transcend the banality of their ego bound lives and move onto another plane, a universal plane free of preoccupations with self. A plane not determined by the dictates of language, time, class, race, creed and culture.
To me, virtuosic performance has the power to dissolve differences and embrace paradox. An audience doesn't necessarily have to understand the specific gestures, meanings or contexts, to be taken into a place of insight and revelation, an audience simply has to experience the altered state of the performer.
